"Not Like Everyone Else"
Coming to terms with the knowledge that we aren't like everyone else can bring about anxiety and fear. It helps to know that others have been there. However, as musician Julie Schurr tells us, those living in the Midwest do not have the same resources as those of us living on either coast.
"I always knew there was something different about me, that I wasn't exactly like everyone else. I didn't really know what it was" Julie Schurr recalls. She was raised in a very conservative Christian household, very sheltered, and non-secular. She knew nothing about diversity or anything outside of church. "I had never met anyone who was gay," Julie Schurr explains. "I had no idea what it meant to be gay. In my world, it was a sin that you would burn in hell for. There were no groups; there was no support system. I didn't have the Internet; I didn't know where to look."

The Vital Voice
"A Schurr Bet"
"Julie writes experience. Her songs are surprisingly honest and emotional and although they are incredibly personal, her charisma is like that of a good storyteller; she sucks you in with unlikely metaphors and imaginatively creates vibrant imagery that appeals directly to the senses."
"Bitch is the ultimate retort, a song any singer/songwriter would want to have in their bag of licks just in case a special someone happened to come to the show. It's eerily fun, bouncy, and deliciously catchy (like a hearty meal best served cold). After all, why resort to petty name calling or giving the bitch who stole your song a black-eye when you can write a few choruses and inspire your audience to sing along?"
"As a musician, Julie's guitar work centers around basic chords but her unique voice and her unabashed writing come together seamlessly to create a contagious vibe that easily rubs off on everyone in the room. She's not afraid to laugh at herself and share the irony found in the many moments that have created who she is--very real."

"Tudinal, impulsive, and it made me laugh."

"[Julie] caught my attention right away.and never let it go. While I was doing live sound engineering, I did something I normally never do...I sat and REALLY listened to this performer rather than just mix the sound. Great, clear voice, dynamic rhythm guitar playing and songs that kept me listening. A performer to watch out for.

"Watching Julie Schurr take to a stage is a beautiful thing. She is a performer whose simplicity is key to her success. She doesn't do any covers, and that adds to a mystique for her crowd. They are all in on the secret, you see. This emotional, funny woman is telling stories with her music and words; and people are lining up to hear her do it. It's a folk-art tapestry of song that weaves emotionally through her audience. And, most importantly, [Julie Schurr] can sing."

"Julie Schurr is a local phenomenon who can be compared to no other. She puts her heart on her sleeve for everyone to see, oftentimes coaxing the listener to laugh at her sentiments. If forced to make a comparison, Julie has the desperation of Trent Reznor, a voice sweeter than Jewel's, and lyrics as meaningful as Tracy Chapman's. Her lyrics are subtly powerful; her messages sneak up on you when you when you least expect it. She begs you to cry with her, then laughs with you at the futility of it all. The only way to really experience the depth Julie has to offer is to attend one of her shows."
